Virginia-Highland Summerfest 2016

Hey there!

We have been invited to participate in our very first juried art festival!  Virginia Highland Summerfest will take place June 4-5, 2016.  We are in booth #228. Thank you so much to the Virginia-Highland Summerfest artist committee for letting us be a part of this!  We would love it if you stopped by to say hi!

“Now in its 33rd year, the Summerfest organization is staffed primarily by volunteers. 100% of net proceeds are donated to the preservation and improvement of this historic neighborhood. Summerfest supports such neighborhood initiatives as sidewalk improvements, lighting, crime prevention, and civic programs. It also financially supports the local parks, schools and libraries. Last year 60,000 attended Atlanta’s favorite neighborhood arts festival.”

“Nature’s Best Photography” Exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

Hey All,

Well, here’s an announcement that I never thought that I would ever be making. One of my images was chosen by the Windland Smith Rice International Awards to be a part of the 2015 “Nature’s Best Photography” Exhibition to be held at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. The exhibition will run for a year starting Oct 24 and go until Oct 2016. Needless to say, I am blown away by this, and never thought that this would ever actually happen. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of this, and want to thank everyone who has been so supportive. It is a dream come true. I wish you all of the best, and if you happen to be in Washington DC, please stop by the Smithsonian to visit my image and say “Hi”. I don’t want him to get lonely!

Environmental Portraits

Environmental portraits are so much fun.  Catching an individual in an interesting space, usually full of gadgets and lots of STUFF, is one of my favorite things to do.  Sometimes I get to do some placement (stand here, please) and give a little direction, and sometimes you are just capturing a moment in the world that they occupy.  The next time you shoot a portrait of someone, try including the entire surroundings.  The space AROUND a person can often help define the story that you want to tell or the moment that you are trying to capture…

Kenny Clark opened his barber shop in 1965.  He has been in that space ever since.  It looks exactly the way that it did when he cut my hair in the 1970’s…minus the flat screen TV to the left that I didn’t include in the picture!

He is a legend in Kansas, creating work that is both iconic and everlasting…
